Performance Reviews Aren't the Answer: Embrace Curiosity for Consistent Career Growth
Everyone knows what those end-of-year performance reviews are like.
In many situations, it’s a quick, “Here, fill out this sheet with goals and objectives, and rate how you think you did this year.”
Those ‘in-and-out’ performance reviews aren’t just not helpful to career growth…they can actually hurt your development. It’s clear that kind of performance review isn’t going to take you anywhere.
Real career development and growth are everyday conversations you have over time. True performance reviews happen consistently, even the small conversations and feedback you hear weekly. Open dialogue is key, and asking questions is crucial to embrace your curiosity, and allowing you to really explore your own growth.
Those check-ins you have with your supervisor, manager, team lead, etc, should be recurring, frequent, and used as an opportunity to embrace the chance to grow yourself.
Even more, between those sessions, you should engage in more development methods, such as asking for feedback from peers, clients, and anyone who can help provide insight into your strengths and areas of opportunity. Also, participate in activities to help you learn new things, add to your skillset, shadow people, and conduct learning projects. All of these just skim the surface of career development.
The best kinds of career growth and coaching conversations have a process around them. Ones that understand the person and their motivators, and create a safe and open environment to do so with clear objectives.
Construct the space to have really good conversations, and really develop your growth.
Progress Coaching has a methodology for having those Career Coaching Conversations, called QALMS.
