How to Perform An Employee Assessment

Objective of Employee Assessment: The objective in doing an employee assessment is to define the performance levels needed by the employee. In doing the assessment it will help the manager and employee find out where the GAP of learning is within specific performance aspects.

Defining Functional Requirements: List all aspects of performance for the employee’s position. Take those aspects and categorize them into the 3 tiers of learning: Skills, Knowledge, and Behavioral. Questions to think about when placing them into each tier: “What knowledge does an employee need to do this job effectively?” and “What skills does an employee need to do this job effectively?”.

How To Do An Employee Assessment: Define the performance areas for the employees position. The manager will then fill in using the rating scale below what he/she feels are the performance level ratings. The employee will also do the same thing using the rating scale below. The two numbers are entered onto the assessment and are subtracted from one another to figure out the GAP between the assessed area.

Below is an example scale for rating employees:

    1.No concept or ability

2.Recognize the concept, but cannot demonstrate any real ability or understanding

3.Know the concept and could demonstrate ability/understanding at a basic level.

4.Demonstrates level of expertise-answering most questions or providing demonstration of ability

5.Could teach/demonstrate without flaw or hesitation and answer questions – absolute expert
