Content Driven Coaching: Positive Leadership and Team Dynamics
Coaches and leaders have an ability to expand the mindset and thought process of the people we're coaching, whether clients or employees. Coaches have a unique ability to get people to think and look at things differently.
I facilitated a program with a client years ago called Always Stay Positive. Every day, everybody had to watch a video of something that was positive or inspirational—motivational videos, sound clips or quotes. We did that for 21 days and everyone had to journal what their major takeaway was for each one. Not their impression because people will easily turn or navigate to the negative or discount the overall point. We framed our questions to be positive, such as, "What are two things you took away from this positively?"
We went back to the leaders of those employees and asked them what they noticed. The majority of them replied there was a noticeable difference in their team.
Here's the lesson with content-driven coaching.
Content fuels people's minds when you watch the news, especially during election time. Does anyone really get invigorated when you watch the news and we think about all the challenges around the world? What does the news report? Challenges, wars, tough times for people. We don't really have a 30 to 60-minute positive news channel, do we? That's mainstream. That fuels people's minds.
Recently, I was coaching someone who is rather lackluster. They don't know what they want to do with their career. When I asked what they did for enjoyment, he started talking about a sport he plays. I said, "That's awesome. So how does that person come into the workplace?" The guy had never thought of that before. When I urged him to think and answer the question, he started laughing and tried to answer. His tone changed.
Then I asked what he listens to when he drives into work. He said the radio. Music, mostly. He just listens to the song that comes on and that's it. Then he gets to work and thinks what a long day ahead of him he has, and he kind of sighs. My next sentence was to ask him to try something. For the next 30 days, I wanted him to listen to something positive on his way to work. No music, no news. Then he needed to think about two things of what he was going to do to just be helpful to other people.
At the end of the 30 days, I asked what he learned, what happened, and what was his major takeaway. He replied, "Man, everybody seems so much nicer to me."
When people get caught up in their own stuff, we tend to lose our energy focusing on all the things we have to do and it weighs us down. We don't think about other people. We certainly do not take the time and reflect and realize, "I should fuel my brain positively."
When we use content, try it with your team. Every staff meeting, lead with something inspirational and just let it sit. This is powerful. When you use content that inspires and motivates, guess what happens? People start to feel different. Their willingness goes up, their transparency, their openness goes up.
Find or create positive and energetic content to use with your team. Whatever content that is in alignment with what you're trying to achieve, then start to fuel people's brains with that. Guess what happens?
