The number one thing managers need to ask themselves when developing their employees is the following question:

"Are my employees more for less inspired to produce effort after I interact with them?"

Think about it. Employees do not arbitrarily get better at handling angry customers or confronting other employees or improving job skills et cetera. The critical thing when developing anybody is to make them feel good, inspired, and motivated about the journey to getting better. All too often we correct people too early in the process and tell them they're doing something wrong; therefore, people do not feel motivated to produce effort which ultimately is the key initial ingredient to improving any type of performance!
